West Ham will undoubtedly be regretting their decision to allow Domingos Quina to depart for Watford back in the summer, as the youngster looks to have a tremendously bright future ahead of him.
What’s the word, then?
The Hammers sold the 19-year-old playmaker to the Hornets for just £1m in the summer in the final hours of the transfer window – Javi Gracia’s side had to submit a deal sheet to ensure the deal went through after the deadline.
Quina has only made four starts this season for his new side, but has managed to score two goals, both of which have been astonishingly good strikes. The Portuguese midfielder left the east London club in search of regular first team football after failing to play in a Premier League game for the Irons, and he looks to have finally settled at Watford.
Quite why West Ham didn’t see the potential he had or fought to keep him is a mystery. The teenager has fantastic technical ability, great dribbling skills and real energy and drive in midfield; a bright future at the highest level looks a certainty.
Why did West Ham let him go?
Whilst the Hammers were battling relegation under Slaven Bilic and then David Moyes, it was particularly difficult to blood youngsters when their Premier League status was on the line.
More experienced stars were trusted to use their know-how to guide the club to safety and, whilst it did work, they may have lost a tremendous young player as a result.
Quina, despite his young age, felt that he was ready to play first-team football and had no intention of hanging around the youth ranks at the London Stadium. He was also soon to be out of contract with the club, so instead of losing him on a free transfer, Manuel Pellegrini decided to cash in on a player who would not be wanting to sign a new deal.
Sadly for them, however, their short-term thinking may have just cost them a gem of a player.
